DC One Card - A New Consolidated ID

Saturday July 12, 2008
Got too many card's in your wallet? The District of Columbia has launched the DC One Card, a new consolidated picture ID card for residents of the District of Columbia that provides access to DC government programs and facilities, including recreation centers, libraries and schools. In June 2008, the DC One Card was given to participants of the city's summer youth program and will eventually become a student ID and an access card for all DC government buildings and programs. The card gives residents the convenience of using one card for local services and can also be tied to the Metro SmarTrip card to be used when riding Metro.

A consolidated ID is a great idea. Wouldn't it be nice if this idea could extend to commercial entities? Everywhere you shop these days you seem to need a membership/discount card. A single card or ID number would be a lot more convenient.
