Maryland Slots Referendum – Question 2

Wednesday October 1, 2008
Will You Vote For or Against Gambling in Maryland?

In November, Maryland voters will decide whether or not the General Assembly can authorize slot machine gambling. The plan would allow 15,000 slot machines at five designated locations across the state. Maryland officials estimate that slots will generate $700 million in revenue and 48 percent of the funds will go directly towards education. Failure to pass the referendum may lead to cuts in services and/or higher taxes. The amendment prevents any additional expansion of gambling anywhere in Maryland without a future voter-approved Constitutional amendment. Those against the slots referendum fear increased crime and gambling addiction and do not approve of the fact that some of the slots revenues will go toward subsidies to the horse racing industry and administrative costs.

Potential Sites for Slot Machine Gambling in Maryland
  • Anne Arundel County - 4,750 slot machines within two miles of Route 295.
  • Baltimore City - 3,750 on city-owned land within one-half mile of I-95 and Route 295
  • Allegany County - 1,500 on state-owned land associated with the Rocky Gap State Park
  • Worcester County - 2,500 within one mile of the intersection of Route 50 and Route 589.
  • Cecil County - 2,500 within two miles of I-95.
