Winter at the National Zoo

Thursday January 1, 2009
Winter is a good time to visit the National Zoo. Indoor exhibits, such as Amazonia with its mock tropical rainforest are especially popular. Winter is often the best time of year to see the giant pandas. Washington's damp, cold winters are similar to the climate of the pandas' natural habitat in the mountains of central China, so they don't mind cold, snowy, and wet winter days. The pandas tend to be more active this time of year than during the humid summer months, and the zoo is also less crowded.
