Inaugural Eve Concert for America's Children

By , About.com GuideJanuary 13, 2009

Follow me on:

The "Kids’ Inaugural: We Are The Future," a concert honoring military families will be held on Monday, January 19, 2009 at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC from 8:00 - 9:30 p.m. ET. Musical performances for the Kids’ Inaugural event include the Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Bow Wow. Billy Ray Cyrus, Keke Palmer, and Usher Raymond IV are also scheduled to appear. 13-year-old Perry Rubin, daughter of entertainment reporter Sam Rubin, will be the special backstage correspondent. This inaugural concert celebration will be hosted by Mrs. Michelle Obama, Dr. Jill Biden and their families. The event will be simulcast on Radio Disney, and will be streamed on Disney.com immediately following the culmination of the telecast on Disney Channel. Additional performers and guests will be announced as they are confirmed.

Update on Tickets: Although the concert was previously announced as a free event with tickets required, it evidently won't be open to the general public. Thousands of tickets, including some of the best seats in the house, have been made available to military families across the DC capital region. The Department of Defense is distributing the tickets for military members, Active, Guard and Reserve, Wounded Warriors, dependents, and Families of the Fallen to their respective Service members free of charge, with the majority of tickets being allocated to the families of enlisted personnel and junior officers. More than a thousand tickets for Monday night's concert are also being made available free of charge to families in the DC area through the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. These tickets will be distributed to children and their families through the organizations' 20 affiliated clubs in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, DC.

The tickets for the children’s concert at the Verizon Center are available for military families only.

(13) Erica :

My husband works at the Pentagon, he just told me that there is an email being circulated about the kids concert. So far he says they are taking names and S.S# of active duty military members and kids for the tickets. Also at the concert those members and kids will have to be present because info will be verified. hope this was helpful

(14) dc :

I have been trying to verify this information and am waiting for a call back from the inaugural committee. I know that lots of people are anxious to attend this event and want to make sure that the information I post is accurate.

(15) DEJA :

Washington, DC: There are no tickets available to the public. This is for military families and kids and it will be televised. however Getting tickets to this event will be close to impossible.. SORRY..

January 14, 2009 at 10:33 am
(16) dc :

I would like to verify this. The inaugural committees press materials do not say anything about tickets and they have not returned my calls. Where did you find this information?

January 14, 2009 at 11:15 am
(17) elle :

Tickets are no longer being sold to the public just to military families

January 14, 2009 at 11:46 am
(18) Erica :

The tickets are free however, thus far only military has access to them. My husband submitted our info this morning, he won’t hear anything back until tomorrow. The tickets have not offically been passed out right now at least at the Pentagon they are just getting military members s.s# along with the names of family members and should hear back on it tomorrow. I will post more info as I find out.

(19) Tina :

Hoping the information on how to/where to get tickets is released soon. Please keep us updated. Thanks!

(20) Cheryl :

I too was mislead by the media reports on this event. Per the Washington Post (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/13/AR2009011303194.html) Kids’ Concert Has Lots of Stars, but No Tickets for the Public. There’s a pre-selected group, mainly military families that will be invited and receive tickets. I’m going to host a little gathering at my home for my daughter and a few friends to watch the concert and celebrate historical event.

(21) Lacy :

Because this concert is honoring MILITARY Families like myself…do we get priority status for tickets? Please help.

January 14, 2009 at 1:34 pm
(22) Erica :

Hello Lacy, I too am military.I am in D.C area and they are currently taking names and s.s # of military members and dependents at the Pentagon were my husband works. I don’t know how there doing it at other commands. My husband said they told him they will hear something back on tomorrow. I don’t know if they are giving the tickets away nationwide to military or just in the D.C area

(23) Tina :

Military in Virginia and New York: Where do you enter your name, ssn, etc. Any phone or web info would be appreciated.

January 14, 2009 at 2:46 pm
(24) dc :

I have updated this page to show that military families only are being invited to the concert. If you area a military family, I would suggest calling your specific unit to find out more. The inaugural committee has not provided any details about how to get tickets.

January 14, 2009 at 2:52 pm
(25) Erica :

Hi Tina, my husband said that the Pentagon sent out an email this morning stating certain commands had a sign up sheet for the tickets each branch of service are getting a certain amount of tickets. May be you can check with someone in the military tell them to check with their commanding officer they should know. I will tell my husband to forward the email to me. Also he did tell me that military members have wear their dress uniforms.

(26) Kristal :

My children and I are dependents of an active duty service member, how do I get tickets.

January 14, 2009 at 3:11 pm
(27) Phoenix :

I simply do not understand why it is so difficult for military families (mine included) to get ticket information regarding this event – besides Erica, lucky you =). My husband does not work at the Pentagon, so he has not receive any email threads for the event. I have called the Public Affairs offices at both Andrews and Bolling AFB, but neither one could provide any info except direct me to the pic2009.org website. How frustrating!

January 14, 2009 at 3:14 pm
(28) dc :

I agree that the PIC has been frustrating to work with. They finally just released a new press release with the information that I’ve added above.

(29) Karen :

do you have to be an ACTIVE member?

January 14, 2009 at 5:59 pm
(30) tee :

u can request them through armed services point contact

January 14, 2009 at 9:37 pm
(31) Tatya :

The cutoff time to put your name on the list was this past Tuesday at noon. Members had to put their name on the list and standby to see if they will be able to attend. Tickets were distributed within the area to units. I would suggest checking with your chain of command to answer any questions.

January 14, 2009 at 10:37 pm
(32) Amy Braun :

Actually, according to my dad (who works on base), the cutoff was today. It was only for Active Military members who are E6 or below. My dad’s chief said this event was under the table and no one knew who was playing at this event (because the PIC didn’t want any hype over the event).

Any info on how disabled veterans families can recieve tickets.

I am retired Air Force. have been living in Germany and working for US Goverment for 26 years. My son has been attending German schools and I would love for him to be a part of something like this. I took him to the World Cup soccer games several years back and he got to see American patriotism at its best, but this will be an experience he’ll never forget. Any chance of getting a ticket?!

January 15, 2009 at 1:18 pm
(35) dc :

Tickets are being distributed through the Department of Defense and the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Washington. Please contact for further information.

January 15, 2009 at 8:12 pm
(36) Cori :

As posted, some of these tickets were set aside for military families whose spouses are deployed and/or wounded. I was able to get tickets via the AFPIC, Protocol Office. As of 3:30pm today, I believe they were all distributed.

ALLA tickets are gone information can be found on http://www.afic.northcom.mil/concert.html

January 17, 2009 at 1:18 am
(38) Shane :

I’m an active duty E-7 and for whatever reason, folks at my unit/base or somewhere in the chain above, excluded senior NCO’s from requesting tickets.

My wife and I have changed our plans on attending one of the official balls in the hope of getting tickets to this so our daughter can attend.

I have a pair of silver swearing-in ceremony tickets that I will exchange for a pair of Kid’s Inaugural Tickets – free tickets for free tickets.

Does this mean that tickets are not transferrable to anyone else? Military or civillian? We are getting tickets from someone who is not able to go, and I have also seen other tickets for sale – so does that mean that anyone from the general public purchasing tickets 2nd hand can’t use them?? Can anyone confirm this?

January 18, 2009 at 9:32 pm

I found out that you do not have to show id or anything else, but the ticket.

My friends mom is in the army. And she was away for a week on a post. She never got any tickets t the show because her mom wasn’t here at the time due to her duties! She called the department of defense and they said there were no more tickets. They gve them all out already? I don’t see how it would be lke first come first serve when they are serving the country also. This just stinks for them because i know my friend is a huge fan of the jonas broher, miley cyrus, Billy ray cyrus, and demi lovato!
