Expanded Cell Service on Metro - Like it or not?

Wednesday October 21, 2009
Cellular phone service has been expanded to provide service underground at the following Metrorail stations: Ballston, Bethesda, Columbia Heights, Crystal City, Dupont Circle, Farragut North, Farragut West, Federal Triangle, Foggy Bottom-GWU, Friendship Heights, Gallery Pl-Chinatown, Judiciary Square, L'Enfant Plaza, McPherson Square, Metro Center, Pentagon, Pentagon City, Rosslyn, Smithsonian and Union Station. So what is the proper etiquette for using a cell phone on public transportation? I'll admit there have been times that I would have liked to make a call. On the other hand I enjoyed the quiet on Metro and I am not sure that I want to hear everyone's personal conversations in such a confined space. So what do you think? Are you happy to have cell service on Metro?

My husband is very happy to have cell phone service on Metro. It gives him a chance to tell me if he is delayed and allows him to take care of all his emails from the west coast before he gets home.

I love having the ability to send and receive text messages and emails but would hope people don’t begin having lengthy conversations as that would be annoying.

(3) Richard says:

Leave the cell phones in your pockets. With 4 or 5 people around you using the phones, it’s just so much extra noise, noise, noise, that our ears and minds don’t need. And why do so many people want their personal conversations made public? Very interesting phenomenon.

I see an Amtrak-like quiet car coming.

(5) Eric says:

Quiet cars would be a great idea. There will always be rude people who want to carry on long conversations if they can. A quick call and especially text messaging & email are fine though.

One person expresses hope people won’t carry on long, annoying conversations? Are you kidding me, that’s all cell phones are used for in public. One of the reasons I stopped riding the Metro was because of the people you already blabber about nothing throughout the ride. And keep dreaming if you think Metro is competent enough to provide quiet cars.
