The dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial in Washington DC will be held on August 28, 2011 on the 48th anniversary of King's "Dream" speech. In addition to the dedication ceremony and concert, many special exhibits and events will be held around the city to celebrate the opening of this important historic landmark. Washington Convention Center - 801 Mount Vernon Place. A public expo will be held August 25-28, 2011 including information booths, performances and a tribute to the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Hours will be Thursday 2-8 p.m., Friday 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday 2:30-6 p.m. Additional events include a concert of civil rights era music, special luncheons and a VIP gala.
Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage - August 26-28, 2011, FREE Performances at 6 p.m. Gospel legends Maggie Ingram and the Ingramettes and D.C'.s own Seven Sons of Soul (August 26) and South Carolina's Marlena Smalls and The Hallelujah Singers (August 27) celebrate the dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. National Memorial in song. Then Holly Bass, joined by a DJ and cadre of wordslingers, hosts a poetic celebration highlighting Dr. King's dream of a nation dedicated to justice, equality, and ending war (August 28).
National Archives - To commemorate the life and accomplishments of Martin Luther King, Jr. the National Archives in Washington DC will present a month-long display of a printed program from the 1963 "March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom" and two screenings of the film The March. The display and film screenings are free and open to the public.
Martin Luther King Memorial Celebration Cruises - The Odyssey and the Spirit of Washington are celebrating the historic dedication of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial with civil rights-inspired cruises on Tuesday, August 24 and Wednesday, August 25, 2011. Guests will enjoy music and live entertainment from the Civil Rights Era, special narration highlighting Martin Luther King Jr.'s achievements, creative cuisine and panoramic views of Washington DC.
Smithsonian Anacostia Museum - August 27, 2011, 1-3 p.m. Family Friendly Monumental Martin. Celebrate the dedication of the new Memorial with educational and fun activities that include interactive music, storytelling, dance, and take-home crafts. Geared to ages 4 to 12.
