The End of Tourmobile in Washington DC

By September 6, 2011

Follow me on:

Tourmobile has announced that it is ending service in Washington DC on October 31, 2011! Since 1967, Tourmobile has operated a shuttle service and narrated tours of the National Mall and were allowed exclusive access to the busiest roads surrounding Washington's top attractions. The National Park Service has decided not to renew Tourmobile's exclusive contract which prohibited the expansion of other kinds of transportation around the Mall. Although Tourmobile was overpriced, it was a combination of tour and transit and was a great way to travel the distances on the Mall. The National Park Service is still sorting out this announcement and how it will affect the sightseeing business in Washington DC. What do you think? Will public buses, bike rentals and pedicabs take over transportation around the Mall?

We were downtown last week and took a pedicab from the Smithsonian castle to the Newseum which cost $20 plus a tip! I’m not sure how “overpriced” the Tourmobile was, but I think it must be a better bargain than that. Next time, it will probably be the Old Town Trolley for us.

That is a shame that Tourmobile is ending service. With so much FREE stuff to do, paying for a ride and tour would seem like a no brainer. Yes, I think people are biking and hiking more these days, and with much more to do they are staying in more confined areas for an entire day rather than trying to hit the entire Mall at one time.

I have taken friends into Washington DC. I love tour mobile because we could get on and off wherever we wanted. I am heading there Oct 1 and am going to take my 4 sisters on it. It is the only way to see the city.

OMgoodness! I’m so disappointed. I just recommended the Tourmobile to a friend. It was the “best deal” to tour the city. Also most convenient and flexible enough to self-determine personal touring priorities. Such a shame.

Just what we need, more people out of work.
