Ford's Theatre is opening its new Center for Education and Leadership in February 2012. The Center features two floors of permanent exhibits addressing the immediate aftermath of Lincoln's death and the evolution of Lincoln's legacy as well as education studios and a distance-learning lab. The Ford's Theatre Society will celebrate the opening with several public and private events honoring Abraham Lincoln's leadership and legacy at both the Center and Theatre. Events include:
- The world premiere of a newly commissioned play about Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass titled "Necessary Sacrifices" (January 20-February 12, 2012)
- An invitation-only opening event on February 8, 2012
- Free public open houses on February 12 (Lincoln's Birthday) and February 20 (Presidents Day) featuring programming at the Theatre and the Center including tours, author discussions, performances of the Society's "Tales of the Lincoln," "One Destiny and "Papa Day," special Civil War-era music performed by the Washington Revels and on-site workshops with the Ford's Theatre Society Education Department. Timed-entry tickets will be available each day beginning at 8:30 a.m. Events run from 9 a.m.-6:30 p.m.
