Washington, DC's cherry blossoms will likely hit their peak blooming period between March 20 - 23, 2012, according to the National Park Service chief horticulturist Robert DeFeo. Note, these dates have been moved up since the earlier prediction. The peak blooming period falls at the beginning of this year's National Cherry Blossom Festival. The date when the Yoshino cherry blossoms reach their peak bloom varies from year to year, depending on the weather. They are considered to be at their peak when 70 percent of the blossoms are open. The blooming period can last up to 14 days. Photo © Bob Nichols/USDA
