An earthquake registering 5.8 on the Richter scale damaged the Washington Monument on August 23, 2011. The National Park Service has closed the Monument and may keep it closed into 2014. A damage assessment by engineers who inspected the stone structure determined that most of the damage is between 475 feet and 530 feet above ground, but panels are damaged from top to bottom. The repairs are expected to take up to 18 months and cost $15 million. Congress has allocated $7.5 million for the project; another $7.5 million will be funded by a private donation from Washington businessman David Rubenstein.
