The National Mall
has been undergoing lots of changes this year and there are many construction projects in the works. Designs have been approved for future improvements
of Constitution Gardens, Washington Monument-Sylvan Theater area, and Union Square (the area in front of the U.S. Capitol Building). Visiting the National Mall
- Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool - Construction anticipated to be completed in August, 2012. The project replaced leaking concrete and installed systems for drawing water from the Tidal Basin, improved accessibility and installed sidewalks and new lights.
- National Mall, Phase I - Center panels between 3rd and 7th Streets. Completion anticipated late 2012. (Final phase anticipated for Fall 2016.) This area of the Mall is being improved with more sustainable lawn areas.
- National Museum of African American History and Culture - Completion anticipated Fall 2015. The Smithsonian Museum will feature a variety of exhibits and educational programs on topics such as slavery, post-Civil War reconstruction, the Harlem Renaissance, and the civil rights movement.
