A panda cub was born at the National Zoo in Washington DC at about 10:46 p.m. on September 16, 2012. Mei Xiang, the mother, is cradling her cub and the zoo's animal care staff is monitoring the cub using the web cams. Mei Xiang will be caring for her cub naturally and the veterinary team will likely not examine the cub for about two weeks. More information will be announced in the coming weeks. This is very exciting for the zoo and future visitors! Read more about the pandas at the National Zoo.
There are no photos yet, but to get a glimpse of what the cub will look like, check out photos of Tai Shan (Mei Xiang's cub that was in 2005). They sure are cute when they are newborns. Tai Shan was returned to China on February 4, 2010 to enter a breeding program.
