A panda cub was born at the National Zoo in Washington DC
on Friday, August 23, 2013. Mei Xiang, the mother, is cradling her cub and the zoo's animal care staff is monitoring the cub using the web cams. The new panda cub is female! It weighs 137 grams, which is about 4.8 ounces. Zookeepers and veterinarians report that the cub is healthy, active and vibrant. This is very exciting for the zoo and future visitors! The cub sure is tiny and doesn't yet look like a panda. To get a glimpse of what the cub will look like in the coming weeks, check out photos of Tai Shan
(Mei Xiang's cub that was in 2005). They sure are cute when they are newborns. Tai Shan was returned to China on February 4, 2010 to enter a breeding program.
