Beautifully decorated pandas adorned the streets of Washington DC May through September 2004. Inspired by the success of its "Party Animals" project two years earlier, the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities sponsored a colorful sequel with 150 panda statues all painted in a variety of designs. The decorated panda statues were displayed on sidewalks all over the nations capital throughout the summer and then auctioned off in the fall to raise money for the arts.
Pandas have been special to Washingtonians since Ling-Ling and Hsing-Hsing arrived at the National Zoo in 1972. Since local residents and tourists have marveled over the real live animals in the zoo, these engaging images of the pandas were very popular.
