Perseus Foundation

A Washington, DC Non-Profit Educating Pet Owners About Animal Cancer

By Rachel Cooper, About.com

The Perseus Foundation, a Washington, DC area based non-profit organization that provides information about cancer to pet owners. Victoria Barquero established the Perseus Foundation in memory of her Chinese Shar Pei named Perseus Magic, who died from a rare type of skin cancer. Barquero’s struggle to find information and support motivated her to create a foundation to educate and empower pet owners to make informed decisions and to help find a cure for cancer in animals by funding research and clinical trials.

The Perseus Foundation collaborates with veterinary oncologists to investigate new treatments by analyzing blood, urine, and tumor samples. The foundation has established relationships with veterinary colleges such as Colorado State University, North Carolina State University, the University of Minnesota, University of Pennsylvania, University of California at Davis, Louisiana State University, Purdue University, Tufts University and the University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign, and more.

The Animal Cancer Institute (ACI), a group of veterinary oncologists located in the Washington DC area, is establishing a network to expand animal cancer research across the country. Nationwide clinical trials will provide the best chance for finding effective treatments. The founder of ACI, Chand Khanna, DVM, PhD, also serves as the chairman of the Perseus Foundation and is the head of the comparative oncology program at the National Cancer Institute at National Institutes of Health (NIH). Khanna’s alliances to all three of these organizations should help connect the results of cancer research to benefit both humans and animals.

Fundraising for the Perseus Foundation

By establishing connections with a variety of organizations, the Perseus Foundation hopes to help pet owners cope with cancer. Rochelle Lesser, a disabled pet owner, operates an an online store selling clothing, hats, bags and artwork to raise funds to assist disabled people who can not afford treatment for their dogs. Lori Lazear, a jewelry maker who sells her designs online, created the Blessing Bracelet Collection. Five dollars from the purchase of each bracelet will be donated to the Perseus Foundation to fund clinical trials and research studies. Laurie Kaplan, a writer, who successfully implemented a holistic home-care regimen for her dog Bullet, shares information about medical treatment, supplementation, diet, and whole health considerations in her book, Help Your Dog Fight Cancer. Kaplan will soon launch the Magic Bullet Fund to raise money to defray the costs of cancer treatment for dogs nationwide.

You may make a contribution to the Perseus Foundation by sending a check to 9810 Dairyton Court, Gaithersburg, Maryland 20879.
