The Toys For Tots – Washington, DC program provides toys to brighten the holiday season for children in local needy families. The program is run each year during the months of October-December. Toys donated should be new, unwrapped and preferably around the $10 or above price range. Any individual, business or organization can hold a toy collection drive. Toys For Tots coordinators assist volunteers and provide collection bins, posters, window stickers, and other promotional materials.
Toys for Tots began in 1947 when U.S. Marine Corps Major Bill Hendricks and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children for Christmas. In 1948, the program expanded and became a nationwide campaign. Since that time, the Toys for Tots Program has distributed more than 332.5 million toys to 158.7 million needy children. The program is now a national effort administered locally in Quantico, Virginia.
