Toys for Tots began in 1947 when U.S. Marine Corps Major Bill Hendricks and a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children for Christmas. In 1948, the program expanded and became a nationwide campaign. As of 2009, the Toys for Tots program and foundation, has collected and distributed almost five hundred million toys. The program is now a national effort administered locally in Quantico, Virginia.
