Important Update: The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk will not be held in 2008 or 2009 due to the Bay Bridge Preservation Project. Portions of the westbound span of the bridge will be redecked and large sections of the concrete roadway will be replaced. Most of the work will be done at night to minimize the impact on traffic. The bus loading area will not be available, so the annual event will not take place until the work is completed.

Each spring on the first Sunday in May, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge closes the eastbound span to traffic to let pedestrians walk the 4.5 miles across the bridge. The annual Chesapeake Bay Bridge Walk, sponsored by the Maryland Transportation Authority, usually brings more than 40,000 participants to walk the bridge and enjoy the view. The walk takes most people about 2 hours to complete. Participants must park at one of the designated parking lots and take shuttle buses to the starting point of the walk and shuttles will return walkers to the parking lots after the walk.
