In 2008, Maryland voters authorized the allowance of casinos and slot machine gambling at five designated locations across the state. Maryland officials estimated that slots would generate $700 million in revenue and 48 percent of the funds would go directly towards education. As of 2012, slots revenue has been lower than expected. Three casinos have been built and two were rebid and awarded in August 2012 - a two-story casino will be built near the Camden Yards stadium in downtown Baltimore and a casino will be built at Rocky Gap in Western Maryland. A sixth location in Prince George’s County was approved by voters in the 2012 General Election.
