Guide Review - Founding Farmers Restaurant Review - Washington, DC

The menu at Founding Farmers includes traditional American dishes such as pot pie, pot roast, roasted chicken, and a variety of salads, sandwiches and soups. As expected, the ingredients are all very fresh and the portions are generous. With such a large menu there is definitely something for everyone. I especially enjoyed the 17 Vegetable Salad, the Boneless Ribeye and the Butternut Squash Ravioli.

Founding Farmers has been designed to meet LEED Gold Certification criteria, which means that it was built to be energy efficient, using recycled and reclaimed products. The wood flooring was reclaimed from a textile mill in Georgia and the white washed wood came from a demolished barn in West Virginia. All of the tabletops and chairs are made from walnut extracted from Harrisburg, PA. Electricity, plumbing and mechanical systems have been designed to reduce energy and water consumption.

The two-level restaurant seats 250. All of the seating has access to natural light and outdoor views. On the ground floor, an expansive bar occupies the center of the restaurant. There are communal tables of 8-20 seats as well as large booths and smaller tables for 2-4 guests. A large outdoor patio seating 110 will open in Spring 2009. The area near the bar can get noisy so ask to be seated on the upper level if you'd prefer a quiet atmosphere.
