The Washington, DC area has a number of great neighborhoods for shopping. Throughout the region you’ll find multiple locations of the large national retail stores such as Barnes and Noble, Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond, Gap, Old Navy, etc. If you know where to look, you will also find plenty of unique stores and shopping venues. Here is a guide to help you find the best neighborhoods for shopping in Washington, DC, Maryland and Northern Virginia.

Georgetown
Georgetown is a popular Washington, DC neighborhood for shopping, dining and nightlife. This shopping mecca appeals to the younger crowd but also has plenty of boutiques and antique stores for all ages. Most of the shops in Georgetown are centered along M Street and Wisconsin Avenue.

Dupont Circle
The lively Washington, DC neighborhood has an eclectic selection of bookstores, clothing boutiques, art galleries, gift shops and coffee shops. A few blocks away, along Connecticut Avenue, you'll find more traditional clothing stores such as Brooks Brothers, Talbots, Burberry's and the Gap.

Penn Quarter
This revitalized neighborhood near the Verizon Center in downtown Washington, DC is bustling with activity among the new museums, contemporary restaurants and trendy shops. Some of the better known retailers include H&M, Pottery Barn, Ann Taylor Loft, Urban Outfitters, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Jos. A. Bank Clothiers. Gallery Place is a popular venue for shopping, movies and restaurants.

Capitol Hill
Eastern Market is a Washington, DC institution, a farmers market that offers fresh produce and flowers, delicatessen, baked goods, meat, fish, poultry, cheese and dairy products. On Saturdays there’s an arts and crafts fair and on Sundays a flea market features antiques, arts, collectibles, crafts and imported goods. Also on Capitol Hill, you’ll find lots of upscale shopping at Union Station, the city’s train station and a shopping mall with more than 130 stores, several restaurants and a 9-screen movie theater.

Chevy Chase, Maryland
This neighborhood on the border of DC and Maryland is a great destination for upscale shopping for the latest in fashion trends. Mazza Gallerie is a multi-level mall located just steps from the Friendship Heights Metro Station. Two blocks away, you’ll find the Chevy Chase Pavilion another shopping mall with luxury retail stores.

National Harbor, Maryland
The new mixed-use waterfront development located on the Potomac River is a growing area with upscale retail shops and restaurants. In the coming years, an outlet mall will be built here expanding the shopping opportunities and attracting visitors from around the region.

Old Town Alexandria, Virginia
Old Town Alexandria is a great destination for a day of sightseeing, dining and shopping. The historic town has a variety of unique shops ranging from antiques to art galleries to jewelry stores to souvenir shops. The Torpedo Factory Art Center has three floors with 84 working art studios. It is a special place to shop for unique gifts and you can watch the artists at work.

Mclean, Virginia
The largest shopping mall in the Washington, DC area is located in Northern Virginia just minutes from downtown DC. With more than 290 stores, Tysons Corner Center offers an extensive selection of merchandise including everything from high fashion apparel to home furnishings. And if that’s not enough, across the street is Tyson’s Galleria, an upscale shopping mall with 120 premium retail stores.

Arlington, Virginia
Crystal City Shops is a unique place to shop with its underground walkway. You’ll find a variety of clothing boutiques, art galleries, gift shops and excellent restaurants. Another great shopping mall is the Fashion Center at Pentagon City with more than 150 shops located on four levels.
