Bastille Day is a French national holiday celebrated on July 14th commemorating the storming of Bastille Prison in 1789 and the launch of the French Revolution. The Alliance Française de Washington and French restaurants in the Washington DC area offer special events and menus in celebration of Bastille Day. This is a great opportunity to learn about the culture and cuisine of France.

Bastille Day Themed Open House
July 11, 2014, 3- 8 p.m. AFDC Dupont, 2142 Wyoming Ave NW Washington DC. The Alliance Française de Washington will open its doors to all for a Bastille Day Themed Open House featuring mini classes, placement tests, wine and cheese, and a DJ. This is a great opportunity to get to know the AFDC community of friends, teachers and students. From 3-5 p.m. is the Kids Open House and 5:30-8 p.m. is the Adults Open House.

Bastille Day French Festival
July 12, 2014, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Hillwood Estate Museum & Gardens, 4155 Linnean Avenue NW, Washington DC. This annual DC festival celebrates France both past and present, with festivities for visitors of all ages, including dance performances, live music, French games, and hands-on art projects. Events take place among Hillwood-founder, Marjorie Post’s first collecting passion for the decorative arts of 18th century France, as well as the magnificent gardens on the estate. The event is sponsored by The Alliance Française de Washington, the largest network of French language and cultural centers in the world.

Bastille Restaurant Specials
July 13, 2014. 1201 N. Royal Street,  Old Town, Alexandria, VA. The restaurant will be serving a special three course $39 prix fixe menu all day from 11:30 a.m. -8:30 p.m.

Garden Bastille Day Celebration
July 13, 2014, 7 p.m.-12 a.m. Garden at Ritz-Carlton, Georgetown, 3100 South Street NW, Washington DC. Art Soiree's annual dazzling celebration of France's favourite national holiday - Bastille Day will take place au Jardin du Ritz-Carlton Georgetown. Celebrating the National Day of France in true French style, the glamorous and sparkling soiree under the open skies will feature  complimentary champagne tasting, music, dancing and of course cake served by Marie Antoinette herself. Tickets: $20 online; $30 at the door (availability not guaranteed). Event is 21+; ticket includes entry, complimentary champagne tasting and cake.

Ciné Francophone: La Fille du 14 Juillet
July 17, 2014, 7 p.m. AFDC Dupont, 2142 Wyoming Ave NW Washington DC. The event is the French take on the timeless theme of the endless summer romp. Hector meets Truquette on Bastille Day and becomes obsessed with seducing her.
