The Gaithersburg Book Festival is a literary festival in Gaithersburg, Maryland that was modeled after the National Book Festival in Washington DC. Authors of both national and local acclaim will address and interact with readers at a free all-day, outdoor event set on the grounds of Gaithersburg’s City Hall. The event has something for everyone covering a wide range of topics including children's books, memoirs, fiction, non-fiction, historical novels, and much more. The Gaithersburg Book Festival will include writing workshops, exhibitors, book sales, book signings, children’s entertainment and activities, food vendors, and a Coffee House featuring poetry readings and musical entertainment.

Festival attendees should park at Lakeforest Mall and take a free shuttle bus to the City Hall grounds. The shuttle leaves from the Transit Center Parking Lot near Sears (at the corner of Odendhal and Lost Knife roads) beginning at 9:30 a.m. The last shuttle will leave the Festival area at 6:30 p.m. Parking at Lakeforest Mall is free.

2012 Festival Highlights

  • Nationally Known and Award-Winning Authors – More than 50 featured authors include included winners and finalists for all the major American awards (Pulitzer Prize, National Book Award, Newbery Medal) and dozens of national, New York Times best-sellers. (More information to be announced soon!)

  • Children’s Village – Kids will be entertained by a variety of hands on activities.

  • Panel Discussions - Five special programs designed to stimulate conversation about writing and the written word: Stewart O’Nan in Conversation with Ron Charles – well-known critic and fiction editor for The Washington Post; The Future of the Book and Bookstore – What does the future hold for the world of the book and bookstore?; Chris Pavone in Conversation with Ian Shapira – Chris Pavone, author of the acclaimed debut novel and New York Times best-seller “The Expats,” and The Washington Post journalist Ian Shapira; Anthology of Women Writers Panel Presentation and Separating Fact from Fiction.

  • Workshops – Topics range from writing books, comedy, college admissions essays and graphic novels to promoting your work, getting your poems published and succeeding in a freelance writing career. Advance registration for the workshops is required, and nominal fees apply.
