Godspeed Sails - America’s 400th Anniversary Landing Festival

By Rachel Cooper, About.com

America’s 400th Anniversary kicked off in May 2006 with a cannon fire salute and the departure of the Godspeed from her home at Jamestown Settlement for an 80-day tour to six East Coast cities. The Godspeed's voyage marked the beginning of an 18-month series of events and programs commemorating the 1607 founding of Jamestown, the first permanent English settlement in the Americas.

At each port a series of family fun events featured live music, children's entertainment, historic and cultural displays, all highlighting the legacies of Jamestown and the growth of America.

Godspeed Landing Festivals were held at:
  • Alexandria Waterfront
  • Baltimore Inner Harbor
  • Penn’s Landing, Philadelphia
  • South Street Seaport Museum, New York City
  • John Joseph Moakley U.S. Courthouse and Fan Pier, Boston
  • Newport Yachting Center, Newport, RI
The Godspeed is a re-creation of one of the three ships that brought America's first permanent English colonists to the Jamestown Settlement in Virginia in 1607. The ship serves as a floating museum for families, students, and thousands of visitors. Following the festival, the Godspeed returned to Jamestown and is now docked at the Jamestown Riverfront Discovery Area.
