In  December 2013, MGM National Harbor, a subsidiary of MGM Resorts International, was awarded  the license to operate the sixth casino in the State of Maryland. A billion dollar Las Vegas style casino will be built in National Harbor, the waterfront development located on the Potomac River near Washington DC. The opening of the resort casino in Prince George’s County will create thousands of construction and more than 4,000 permanent jobs and generate millions in additional revenue for the county and the state. The resort is expected to open in Summer 2016.

The MGM Casino at National Harbor will attract local residents, but will also serve as a new amenity for the more than 40 million domestic and international visitors who travel to the capital region each year. The resort will be designed to include:

  • 3,600 slots and 140 table games including poker
  • a 300‐suite 4.5‐star quality hotel with luxury spa and rooftop pool
  • high-end branded retail
  • fine and casual dining – from both local and celebrity chefs
  • a dedicated 1,200-seat theater venue
  • 35,000 square feet of meeting and event space
  • a 5,000-space parking structure.

General contracting company Whiting-Turner will serve as prime general contractor and will direct, supervise and coordinate construction of the approximately $1 billion project. Whiting-Turner will oversee dozens of subcontractor firms and more than 2,000 construction workers over the project’s expected two-year construction schedule.  The resort recently took steps to engage the local employment markets, already preparing to begin the process of hiring nearly 4,000 new hospitality positions.
