The Washington DC area is busy throughout the seasons and traveling around the region can be especially stressful around the holidays if you don’t plan ahead. Here are some tips to help you get around during the busiest times of the year.
- Use public transportation – The best way to get around Washington DC and to the suburbs of Maryland and Virginia is by Metro. Purchase farecards in advance to avoid waiting in crowded lines. Don’t drink and drive, take SoberRide, a free taxi service that provides a safe way home during the holidays.
If you are traveling to the airport, plan ahead and find parking options and discounts. Consider leaving your car at home and taking an airport shuttle. Parking is expensive and often the public lots are full during the holidays.
- Leave early – Traffic in the Washington DC area can be unpredictable. Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination. See estimated travel times around the region (note, these are estimates during non-holiday times)
- Check the weather and traffic before you go - Be ready to anticipate delays or take an alternate route by checking the weather and traffic reports.
- Send gifts ahead of time – The less you have to carry, the quicker you can get where you are going. If you send gifts ahead, you won’t have to worry about losing or damaging them and you will never show up empty handed.
- Relax and have fun!
