Name of Organization
I do most of my holiday volunteering with my church and my Girl Scout troop.
Volunteer Activity - What I do to help
Our church participates in the Winter Shelter program for our county's homeless residents. All during the holiday season volunteers work to prepare for the one-week stay of 40+ homeless people. Usually my homeschool co-op collects warmth items (like socks) for the shelter program and donates them to our church. This year I have also signed up to bring food for the week's meals - and I'm waiting to see which areas need last-minute volunteers, too.
My Girl Scouts made "snuggies" - little pet blankets - to donate to an animal shelter this year. It is part of our "Sew Glam" interest project. All my scouts love animals and really enjoyed making soft fleecy blankets for the bottom of the animals' cages. (I made one, too!)
Advice
- Every little bit helps. No donation is too small. No homeless shelter or food bank can help people without donations. Even one can of food is helpful - it's one more can of food our local hungry residents can really and truly use. We have so many, many homeless and hungry people in the DC area. Every dollar counts, particularly this year.
